COMM 323 - ePortfolio Part 1

Wix Experience:

Since I already have an established Wix account from previous classes, the easiest part of setting up my ePortfolio was just editing my page content instead of creating a site entirely from scratch. I will also add that as in prior courses curating the page can be challenging since there is only so much that can be improved semester over semester. This is especially true given the positive feedback I received about my site format and content from other professors. At this time, I feel confident in my professional online presence. I have worked hard to develop my Wix.com ePortfolio for several semesters and believe it conveys a professional image.

Leadership:

I have been very fortunate to have worked with many great leaders in my 20 years in the advertising industry. My current manager is one of my favorite bosses I have had so far. I really appreciate his transparent communication style, meaning he is open, direct and honest with me. Messages are delivered without interference and his style of leadership is a stark contrast to my former manager who felt the need to be coy, vague and even deliberately uncommunicative at times. The approach my current manager has taken works well, creating a sense of inclusion and team. In turn, it has even given me more confidence in my communication openness.

Event Experience:

A recent event I attended that was poorly managed was my cousin’s funeral. The things that bothered me most about the event was the poor communication to the attendees about what was happening when and where. There was a special family room that we could have participated in, but we were not sure where in the church it was located. That meant we did not get the opportunity to spend time with our family members before the service began. I also spoke at the service as well as several other family members, and the officiant kept adjusting the microphone in front of each speaker, which was distracting and not necessary since the mic was able to pick up the voices of short and tall speakers without being moved. Another moment of the service that could have been improved was the final song. There was a single man with a guitar who sang and played, but he made a few mistakes and that really stands out when you are sobbing in a funeral service. If I were in charge I would have made sure the stage setting was not altered for each speaker unless there was an issue when they were speaking. This would have made for a smoother, more elegant experience for the attendees. I also would have made sure the musician was a professional and had enough practice to not make as many mistakes during the performance.
